When this pic was taken, the C&TS owned but one set of marker lights. At the time of this photograph, the only car on the RR with marker light brackets was the 0503. The regular trains carried no form of rear end marking device. The only reason someone would have put the markers on the rear is because whoever was on the trip thought it would be nice to carry the markers on the rear and went to the trouble of going to the office and getting them. They were stored safely away from liberating hands. We probably didn't have a set of white flags handy. I remember 488 having that scarred up tender herald, but I don't remember the year. It is possible the pic is shot in the morning, and 0503 is going to put on the rear of the train as a charter move. Putting our markers on 0503 for a charter is unusual. Perhaps the chartering party brought their own markers (that happened a few times).
