One of the things I used to try to do is avoid crossings, or be behind the crossing and not right on it, as the whistle will kill it.
Whistles are best heard in the distance, and the microphones can usually handle the thundering exhausts. Another variable is the limiter on
the recorder/camera. I should play around more with manual audio settings, but am afraid I will forget to change it back. I have old 3/4 tape
where I chased a trip all day only to find the audio switch on the side of the recorder(under the case) was in the off position. I have a nice silent chase
of 611 on a one way trip to Birmingham in 1986 from Cincinnati that way. We got in so late for the overnight that I never tried to play it back on a tv. Back then
you had no playback in the camera!!! Also all was black and white viewfinders. Am dating myself now! I could write a book chapter on all the weird issues over 35 years!
