Hello again folks, no new pictures (still waiting on the replacement surface pro 4 from Microsoft before I'll edit any RAW files), but in the meantime here's a video of #425 showing why she's the rockstar of steam in the East every Fall.
Description: Every year the Reading & Northern run fall foliage trips originating currently out of the Outer Station in Reading, PA and traveling all the way to Jim Thorpe, PA. Pulling these trips is Reading & Northern pacific #425. As the rockstar of steam in Pennsylvania #425 demonstrates consistently what makes her so special with her extremely loud and chest punching exhaust. If you haven't had a chance to see this locomotive operate in person whether on fall foliage trips or others, then you are missing out!
In this video we take you to various locations from Hamburg, PA to Jim Thorpe, PA and return as we watch #425 struggle on the hard grades near Tamaqua and Nesquehoning, PA. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show (really)!
Thanks for watching!
BTW, for those interested, #425 while on Hometown Hill is pulling the SD50 plus all 13 sold out cars by herself. The diesel was in idle the entire time and #425 was on her knees at 10 mph, treading sand, wide open in the corner, and at one point had her lowest safety valve going off. Seeing that last week was just about the best thing involving steam railroading that I've ever seen, period. According to Wikipedia #425 has about 35,000 pounds of tractive effort, so being able to pull that much for a light pacific on a 1.3-1.5% grade is very very impressive. Oh and did I mention its all hand fired with good ole Pocahontas coal?
P.S. My apologies for the mic clipping at the end. #425 tends to do that.
