The next task was to find the big incline on Speckerman Mountain. It was supposed to be east of Camp 1 and climbed the side of the mountain for over a mile to a logging camp used in 1924. I had driven down the grade on three previous occasions and could not find it. Then I found the online Metcalf collection at UC Berkeley and found there was a photo of the bottom of the incline, but looking away from it. This was enough of a clue that I felt pretty confident I could find it on my 4th attempt. My wife drove while I scanned the grade and hillsides looking for a location that would match this photo taken in 1923 by Donald Bruce:
I think this is the correct location:
There's also a nice photo by Donald Bruce of the end of the log car and the cable attachment:
Interesting that MSP both wrapped wire rope around the end beam of the car as well as attached to the coupler pocket. Kind of like a homemade safety chain. Or is it possible that this car was semi-permanently attached to the cable and hoist and brought up other cars?
Looking uphill, there seemed to be no evidence of any incline railway:
Now I'm puzzled!
To be continued...
