You will find those torch marks on the #3 counterweight on several of the engines. I've never been able to figure out the purpose. The main and side rods hang lower than where the cut marks start, so I doubt it was some sort of clearance issue or hitting something. The only other reason I could come up with involved improving the counter balancing. But in the big picture, the little bit of steel removed from the bottom of the counter balance would have little to no effect on the balance of the machinery.
At least 493 has good tires on her with enough meat to get a turning on them.
