Modern technology might help.
There are many parts of inspection and service that must be done by hand. For those, you will get dirty and have to crawl into tight spots. If all you need is to look at, but not feel, something, I'd imagine a digital camera on a long stick might be a real time saver.
A component of historic preservation is inspections. Drones with cameras have made inspections so much easier! You can inspect a roof, chimneys, gutters, and other hard to reach places faster, cheaper, and more safely with a drone than you can via a ladder or scaffolding. Of course, sometimes you just need to get a closer look, and for that you will climb the ladder and have that look! Also, a drone won't fix anything. If you need to get dirty, there is no substitute for hands on work.
