In short, the car is supported by a spring plank which hangs from the truck bolster by swinging links, allowing the car to swing from side to side over the truck. Shifting the car to the side raises it as the links rotate, so the weight of the car tends to keep it in the center position, while it can swing slightly in response to lateral forces.
