Durango's attitude really changed after all the refugees from Texas and California began arriving in the '70s. It wasn't just the dislike of the railroad, they didn't like the mining in Silverton either. They didn't like the dirty miners, but they sure liked our money. If they succeed in shutting down the railroad I can see a lot of the national forest being torn up for ski runs and Durango being turned into another Aspen or Telluride. Silverton will survive, but I'm afraid that it will change beyond recognition.
