I believe that D&S CMO Randy Babcock has related the railroad's future power plans on this forum and has provided updates a couple of times. Basically, the railroad planned to utilize four K-36s and three K-28s, with the expectation that most of the time, one engine would be in the shop for major maintenance (1,472 SDI, running gear overhaul, etc.). So far, it appears as if the plan is on track. The 476 is back out on the road, and the expectation would be that when any needed inspections or repairs on the K-36s are done, 478 would be next in line for a 1,472 SDI, along with some repair work. It seems like a sound strategy to me. Injecting a 3rd class of locomotive into the mix probably makes less sense.....despite the fact that many casual observers (like us) would like to see a '37 running there.
