I dunno, Rich -
Trains has a huge readership – WAY bigger than the NGDF – so hopefully this event will attract a sizable number of new fans to the C&TS.
IMHO, a couple of the suggestions made this week would be easy to implement, and wouldn't add a dime to the cost of the charter
:
1. Run the eastbound trip with #484 at the rear, just in front of the caboose like the D&RGW did in the sixties, not as a double-header.
2. Keep the seven available boxcars next to #484 both days, so at least one half of the train looks a lot like the last freights in '68.
Three more suggestions have been made that would probably cost a few hundred dollars each, but would make Phraud-O-Graphs™ a bit more believable
:
3. Paint up #492 or #497 as #498, and have her join #483 & #484 as part of the Friday night photo session. Use a hose to provide
some ambient steam so she looks alive but settled down for the night
. . .
4. Remove the plow from #489, and paint her up instead of #488 as the stand-in for #483. #489 is a better match.
5. Paint up caboose #0503 as #04343 for the weekend by adding the railroad's name to the trim board and "headrests" in the cupola.
Greg Scholl's suggestion would add quite a bit to the cost, but IMHO would also create a MUCH more interesting and unique event
:
6. Use #315 to pull a "chase" train, so that the Phraud-O-Phreight can be as authentic-looking as possible, and the riders get to see
yet another class of engine – maybe for the first time. Plus interspersing cabooses (or coaches) with rider gons would provide more
steps for quicker exit / reloading at photo stops. (Or – even better – use #463 to pull the chase train eastbound on Saturday, and
#315 westbound on Sunday so that the many visitors from the east get to see / ride behind as many different locos as possible.)
Eighty riders at $649 totals nearly $52,000 if the trip sells out, so maybe investing in a chase train to encourage a sellout – and a lot of happy and future repeat customers – might not be a bad idea
. . .
