Bill, the 4000s were gone before 1943. I saw one of them in Hawaii in 1969 while on my way to Vietnam. It was painted Navy gray and was sitting on a siding at the US Navy ammo storage site at Lualualei along with a Nevada County Narrow Gauge box car. The Navy had hauled ammo from Pearl Harbor to this site until 1968 but the track was still in place. The base was closed and locked down so I could only peak thru the fence.

LAST OF 87 FREIGHT CARS FOR HAWAII DELIVERED HERE
According to W.S. Gilmer, round house foreman here the last of 87 narrow gauge box and flat cars reconditioned at Gunnison's Rio Grande shops by the Chicago Freight Car Parts Company were delivered to the government this week and are on their way to Honolulu. After Pearl Harbor the Army undertook a renovation of numerous little systems on the Hawaiian Islands in the interest of nation defense and as slim gauge repair facilities were good locally, the company which had the contract has had 16 to 18 men at work here. Of the cars, 76 were purchased from the old Colorado and Southern, and only 11 secured locally.
