All,
I have been making a 1:20.3 coal-fired live steam model of the RGS 74. Throughout the process I have taken many pictures of the prototype sitting at the Colo RR museum. In making the tender, I have had to duplicate an oddity at the front of the tender: the left water leg, closest to the fireman location, has a simple piece of sheet metal attached vertically to the top of the leg. The piece has a slot cut in the top of it, maybe for the purpose of holding a coal rake?

In any case, does anyone know what purpose this piece served?
