Update on Lake City Combine Car 211
D&RG #278 with Combine Car 211 in Sapinero with Engineer Pete Ready 1920's
Used on the Lake City Branch between 1900 and 1933, this Combine Car was converted from 1881 Coach #298 in 1900, by Billmeyer & Small Car Works in York, Pennsylvania, where it was in service until it was retired in August of 1940. It was 42 feet long and 8 feet wide, and featured 12 seats and a bathroom, for 24 passengers, and a 7.5 X 17 foot baggage and freight compartment, with a bunkbed.
The target of this fund raising campaign is $50,000.00, to repay the Historical Society Reserve Fund, that was used to purchase the car, and transportation of the car to Lake City, of which $3,000.00 has already been pledged.
Extensive rebuilding and restoration will be needed before the car will be ready for exhibit, with preliminary cost estimates ranging from $80,000.00 to $100,000.00. Most of the money will come from historical preservation grants, however, many grants require matching funds to support the project.
