Just a quick clarification to what you said. The helpers would only go ahead of the train to Alamosa in the later years, when there were no helper crews out of Chama. In the earlier days the helper would return to Chama for more work the next time a helper was needed to Cumbres. Not sure what year this change was made, but it was when traffic decreased, probably in the early 60's! Earl or others would know for sure.
