The reporter in the film was an actor. Gus Roberson was a real rancher who lived in the Ohio Creek Valley north of Gunnison. When I was in the newspaper biz in Gunnison I interviewed his daughter, who is seen as a child in the film, and remembered it well. It also gave me an opportunity to research the shoot in old newspapers. The film company made several trips to Gunnison over the course of a year (1949-1950) to document the various seasons. It was said to be a festive occasion when they came. The filmmakers were shown Gunnison hospitality at its best. They ultimately rewarded Roberson for his cooperation by presenting him with a 1951 Ford pickup truck. And no, the truck didn't survive. It was driven to death. I asked.
