Besdes the high speed of the J's in the flat lands(100 mph on the east end), they were also designed mainly for keeping a 40 mph speed in the mountains(West Virginia and Virginia mainly) of the Norfolk and Western. They were fine engines and luckily one (611) survives and ran through here in the old days.
