Yah, I forgot about the spoked wheels. They caught my attention first that day; then almost immediately I realized the wheels had tires.
The 1203 is one of the very first C-C diesels built. If you don't count the US Army ALCO locomotives that were shipped to Iran, etc. during WWII, 1203 is only the third locomotive sold for domestic use with C-C trucks. The first two were concept locomotives built by GE in 1936 for the Illinois Central transfer use in the Chicago area; one unit had a Ingersoll-Rand 1800hp diesel engine and the other a Busch-Sulzer 2000hp diesel. Chicago, like New York, was an early city to ban steam locomotives for local switching to reduce pollution.
