Hi,
In the cast of rebuilding the Virginia & Truckee, there was a subdivision on the old grade. A new grade was deemed less expensive than fightinh the subdivision.
Any rebuilding of the D&RGW west of Chama wold need to recognize this necessity - some relocations would be needed.
Another point is that the C&TS needs to cover operating costs. What is the source of tourist draw for this endevor? If that can be determined and is viabale, then ideas of rebuilding could be floated about.
The existing 64 miles of C&TS is marginal at this time. I do not see anything positive about rebuilding the line to Dulce or farther.
If the line was built west to Lumberton (?) and then up the old logging grade to Pagosa Springs, then the Pagosa Springs visitors might be a draw for the line west of Chama. How about a dinner train run out of Pagosa Sprigs?
Is there any potential for a raft and rail service?
Is there enough snow south of Pagosa Springs for cross county skiing? A train could assist in that.
Food for thought.
