DL&G never bought out the CC. Both were contolled by the Union Pacific (UP was involved with CC from an early date and took control by the mid-1870's, bought control of DSP&P in the Fall of 1880) but they were separate rrs until the C&S cam along in 1899.
In 1884-85 UP renumbered the equipment on its subsiduary lines into a common numbering sequence and moved equipment freely between them. Equipment was lettered for UP with sub-lettering for the actual owning road. (also important to note that this was *not* todays UP but a much weaker road.)
DSP&P went into bankruptcy in 1885 and was reorganized (still under UP control) as the DL&G in 1885-86.
CC remained itself until included in the UPD&G merger in 1890, along with DT&G, D&FtW, and C&N (but *not* DL&G).
UP went into recievership in October of 1893 but several Colorado bond & stockholders (led by Gov. Evans) had already gone to court for a seperate recievership for UPD&G. Frank Trumbull was appointed. In 1894 the UP recievers decided DL&G was not an asset to the system and, in August of 1894, Mr. Trumbull was also appointed Reciever of the DL&G. This move was sought by the UPD&G investors to protect their traffic to/from the mountains of Colorado. Both lines were sold at auction in December of 1898 and combined into the new C&S. (whew!)
So DSP&P/D&LG cars & locomotives were often used on the CC/UPD&g from 1881 on but they remained seperate roads untill January of 1899.
