a Barclay loco originally came from the Miranui Flax tramway around Shannon and Makarua.
Flax being harvested to make Hemp ropes; this has a local connection for me since I have several hundred metres of rail from that flax tram here on my own tramway.
The Makarua subway underpass is still in existence under the Kiwirail Main Trunk line. This was near the location for the narrow gauge speed record set by the Wellington & Manawatu Railway co. [nzhistory.govt.nz]
