A theory I've had: From the direction they were switched, the engineer could look at the car side a brakeman was riding on in either narrow or standard gauge equipment. Montrose was usually switched with engines to the North, and Alamosa from the West. In the other direction, the body of the engine would obscure hand or lantern signals.
