The Spring C&TS Dispatch has a most interesting article by editor Chris James. He presents the routes surveyed & not surveyed, & the factors that influenced the selection. I was quite surprised to learn that the ultimate choice, going over Cumbres Pass, had not been formally surveyed, nor favored by those who had surveyed the other possible routes.
