D&RGW Excursions for 1964

Some of these came from Earls info on 480 recently. Others from other sources of pics, etc. Here is what I have.


1964 Last use of engine 480

On May 29, 488 came west with the annual Rocky Mountain RR Club outing, Bob Shock and Virgil Headrick were deadheaded over from Durango to take it east going on duty in Chama at 1250pm. 488 straight to Durango-480 along with Otteson and Cunningham got the day off on Chama.

May 30 saw the RMRRC going to Silverton. 480 and crew cooled their heels in Chama. The crew was making money though getting "Penalty Time" for being held at an away terminal. Once the crew got their 8 hours of rest after tieing up in Chama on 5/28, they got paid penalty time of straight time until they got called to go home.

Finally, around noon on May 31, 487 blew in from the west with the returning RMRRC train. 480 along with Otteson and Cunningham, were called at 1150am. Holt and Smith were deadheaded from Alamosa to Chama to run 487 east. 480 helped 487 up the hill, ran light to Alamosa, and tied up fro the last time.
