People often view the two footers as toys or amusement park trains, however the prototype was anything but. The longest railroad once had 112 miles of track, and hauled everything from pulp wood, logs, lumber, sawdust, grain, mail, passengers and more. They encountered grades as steep as 6%, and two of the two footers had big 2-6-0's and 2-6-2 tender engines.
And today museums in Maine help depict the old days when the railroads were common carriers.
