I was talking with a friend in the business about this. Theoretically, you could have an online business with very little inventory. You just raise your flag on the internet and get customers to make their reservations with you.
But, depending who you are working with, it might take 6 months, a year, or more, for product to finally arrive from China. That means you won't see any cash flow for a long time. In the mean time, how do you convince perspective customers to order from you? Cut your prices so low there's no chance of profit? Build up a reputable name in the business like Caboose Hobbies so that search engines list you?
So having those pre-orders on the books was a good thing. And of course the name "Caboose Hobbies" does have value, even if there is nothing in common with the old store. I imagine it wouldn't be easy to start any kind of business these days when the majority of the product you sell needs to be reserved a head of time.
