I was a year older than Russo on that trip, and I guess I'm still a year older even today. It was a grand trip all the way, even to almost missing the return leg from Durango because we spent too much time in the Diamond Belle the night before. I don't think I sat down for those 3 days either, except we were camped out in the very end of the gondola most of the way. I met several people on the trip who remain good friends. The only part I finally sat down was to ride in the Alamosa from Antonito into Alamosa--the kerosene lamp was lit, it was warm in the car, the crowd was quiet and I think very reflective that this was maybe the end of it all, and we were moving at a pretty good clip, the coach gently swaying, making wood coach sounds. It was great. And to think that if I get in my car after I send this posting off, in a couple of minutes I can be looking at a real live steam passenger train sitting here in town, repeating at least a part of the trip we took 50 years ago--a half century!
