My assumption was spring return. What I assumed was an angle globe valve with the bonnet, stem and handle missing may in fact be a union tee like is used on an air brake train line. I am guess now looking at my own photo of this tee which is just behind the stack in the photo, is that the union nut, gasket, half the union and a short vertical pipe are missing. Otherwise the air compressor would be working against pressure on the exhaust side. Hope you will excuse me Earl and others for taking this thread away from Cass, a place I'd dearly love to visit someday.
