The further I delve into this gas transmission pipe question, the worse it gets. My starting point is from Sloan's book, to wit:
"From November 1957 to February 1958, 150 miles of 16" pipe in 40' lengths was shipped to Farmington. The 16" pipe was usually loaded about 15 per car. The earlier 30" pipe in 40' lengths was loaded 8 per car."
I fired up AutoCad and tried to figger out how the 30" pipe would be loaded in the gons, and the only thing that I can come up with is that it was in four layers with two pipes per layer. And I assume there were wooden spacers (6X6's ??) in between. This would make the total load height (including the car) about 12-13', which seems to me would make it top heavy, although still within the loading gage (I think).
I would gladly give up the rights to my first born if someone could furnish me with a photo of a gon loaded with 30" pipe.
I haven't tried anything yet with the 16" pipe, but hopefully I won't run into the same problem.
