Hi,

These two photos are of the Gainesville Jefferson and Southern (later Gainesville Midland) near the Mulburry River. The fist is the northern approach to the river - notice the loblolly pines and the Georgia Red Clay. From the top of a high fill using a zoom lens, the pilings for the bridge are still in the river.

The GJ&S became the the GM in 1904 and was standard gauged in 1914 (last narrow gauge in GA). The rails were removed in 1948. This narrow gauge mainline to Social Circle became a narrow gauge branch line to Monroe in 1906.

The line probably carried standard gauge cars on narrow gauge trucks. There is evidence in one of the Sanborn Insurance Maps of a short section of 4-rail in the middle of the yard in Monroe. A probable Ramsey Transfer.
