Dynamo exhausts

February 07, 2014 03:11PM
I have always noticed the engines in Durango have a brass diamond stack to their dynamo exhausts. Most of the engines in Chama just have a straight pipe exhausts with a slight curve back towards the cab at the top of them. (See the attached pictures)

Most historical pictures of the Rio Grande show the engines with the straight pipe exhausts as well so I figured it was just a "post 1981" change made to the steam engines by the D&SNG.

However I was watching a Pentrex video of Chama from what I think is the early 1990's and I noticed 489 had the diamond stack exhaust in the video so it got me wondering.

1. When did these diamond stack exhausts come about, was it a Rio Grande era change or was it done by the D&SNG (or the C&TS in the case of 489)

2. What is the point of the diamond stack on the dynamo? Just to help deaden the whine of the dynamo?

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!
