Hi, John -
That shot of the Garratt is a beauty! The two or three fans standing just below the curve are
barely visible, and could easily be "PhotoShopped" if you really wanted to make the effort.
Like you, I often try to get off to the side and away from the crowd, but this is getting harder to do as my legs and sense of balance weaken with increasing geezerliness. At one location on Pete's V&T charter last February 8th, another fan and I hiked a short way up an embankment and for the most part got shots over the heads of our fellow foamers. As the train approached I deliberately included a few of
them you in my shot

One of the things I like about the C&TS, especially on the east end, is that there are several locations where there's a wide vista and where there's usually plenty of room for us to spread out - like at the hillside about a half-mile west of m.p. 317

... where everyone was able to get shots like these (probably better), and the videographers weren't subjected to shutter clicks only two feet from their mics
:
OTOH, there are also a few places - such as either portal of Rock Tunnel and at m.p. 317 eastbound - where it's usually necessary to have two run-bys so that everyone gets a fair chance at a good shot (see [
ngdiscussion.net]).
