Another engineer who worked out of Durango in the 1930s who I wondered about in the 1950s was L.J. Oberrich. He was one slot ahead of Roy Bucchanan. He must have found work in Alamosa.
It looked like enginemen like Frank Howe, Bob Shock and Steve Connor finally got regular work as firemen in the 1940s and were promoted for up to 10 years before they got regular work as engineers.
