D&S #7 is much larger than the engine at CRRM. I think it wieghs in at around 70 tons and has traction motors (and most importantly traction motor cooling blowers) on each axle. The smaller 50-ton jobs that the CRRM and D&S own have one traction motor per truck with a chain drive to second axle (with no blowers). There is a double-reduction gearbox from the motor to the axle giving better starting power, but much lower speed.

A GE 44 toner (and the 47-ton drop cabs like C&TS 19) were built with Caterpiller D17000 V-8's and use motors on each axle - but do not have TM blowers. The lack of TM blowers make these smaller engines not really suitable for long heavy pulling.
