Hi John et al -

Six or seven years ago now, I purchased a Canon Canoscan P9950f flatbed scanner
similar to what you are describing - which can handle prints up to 8.5" x 11", and has
holders for slides as well as several sizes of negatives from 35mm up to 4"x5".

Here's a lo-res comparison of a photo-lab drum scan of a 35mm slide done about fifteen years ago, with cropped but un-retouched output from the Canoscan when it was new:
Drum-9950.jpg

The Canoscan file has a distinct reddish tint - easily corrected - but also much higher resolution and much better details in the shadows. Here's the almost final edit of the latter (I still need to lighten the shadows a little):

All of my older shots posted on the NGDF for the past several years have been scanned on the 9950 - both 35mm and 6x7cm slides and negatives. (See [ngdiscussion.net] for some examples scanned from 6x7 originals.)
