Let me throw this into the works. The Sumpter Vallley had two different cabooses numbered 3.
The second one was a rebuild of the first one. The question becomes one of what part of the first one was salvaged and used on the second. Was the body rebuilt or was only some of the metal work reused? From the dimensions on the sheets I have it appears that the body was not reused. So maybe the old body may have been sold off.
