485 was indeed extensively damaged, though it had just been recently shopped. The late George Headington, who I interviewed about 10 years ago when I was working on my Salida book (shameless plug here!), was the shop foreman in Salida at the time. He told me that many of the usable parts off of the 485 were used in the rebuilding of the 489. 489 was the last engine overhauled at Salida and, from my information, was given an exemplary overhaul. Though I haven't confirmed it, I don't believe it was given a complete overhaul again until the C&TS restored it to operation.
