This is the story of how a group of volunteers opened the Cumbres and Toltec for service, 1n 1970. The audio file below is excerpted from "The Rattle and The Roar" Volume 6.
September 3: Through the generosity of many citizens of Antonito, 483 was refueled with coal, and its tank filled with water. Departure was at 11:30 a.m., this tine 483 pulling the "crew car" and the first cut of cars left behind the day before (484 and five cars) . Lava was reached without any bad slipping, and water was taken there. The train then continued on toward "Big Horn, but stalled again at MP 294.2. Leaving 484 and four cars behind, 483 went to Big Horn with the two cars behind it. Setting these two cars off at Big Horn with the two cars behind it. Setting these two cars off at Big Horn, it returned to pick up the 484 and its four cars. It was sunset when this train got within 1/4 mile of Big Horn, where it had to drop the four cars. Pulling only the 484, it finally set the 484 off on the tail of the Big Horn wye. Shortly, the remaining four cars were set off on the siding there. Again picking up the "crew car", it backed all the way to Antonito, stopping to take water at Lava. It was midnight by the time the crew tied up for the night at Antonito. The Line-Up:

Big Horn - 484, 7 cars
