Federal Copyright Law is written in such a way that the Artistic License remains with the artist, sculptor, or photographer for 50 years as long as the work has been signed. A copyright release from the creator is necessary in order to make any copies whatsoever. This law has serious financial penalties involved. $25,000 to the store owner and $25,000 to the employee for each infraction. K-mart (I believe) just settled out of court with one of the Professional Photography Associations for millions of dollars because the Kodak Picturemaker machine was self serve and the Association documented people copying copyrighted material several thousand times. A photographer can release copyright by including the negatives in the purchase price. If you don't have the negatives; and the picture identifies the photographer or the studio by name, or the paper has been manufactured with a copyright logo and a Do Not Copy statement on the back, you must get a copyright release from the studio or photographer.
