Hi Phil, You can check the web site for MOW, Motorcar Operators West at [www.mowonline.org] and [www.narcoa.org]
First you will need to join MOW $24.00 a year and take the operators test and be mentored on an insured MOW excursion. You will have to join NARCOA $20.00 a year plus purchase the insurance at $160 + per year, this varies, and also take the operator certification test. You will have to own a standard gauge motorcar to get the experience. In order to go on a narrow gauge excursion it is required you be experienced and you have a proven dependable motorcar. You can find a motorcar for sale on either of these web sites listed.
If you purchase a Fairmont MT-14 this car can be modified into a dual gauge motorcar quite easily, and they look fairly good when converted.
There are motorcar excursions all over the US, Canada and also into Mexico. A meet coordinator will arrange an excursion on a particular railroad and each operator will pay a given amount of money to operate his or her motorcar on this railroad in an organized group.
Recreational motorcaring is a serious and fun hobby, but it sometimes can be quite expensive, owning different gauge motorcars , trailer and tow vehicle and motel and traveling expenses.
I hope this answers your question.
Best regards,
Smitty
