It is all a gamble on your own health and your risk profile. The "average" life expectancy is meaningless if you get cancer or run over by a truck. Are you willing to move into a mobile home in eastern Kentucky? Then you could probably retire today, but most people mean "retire in my current style of living".
The average life is getting longer, and for most people those older years are active years as well. Here in Denmark, the government has figured that out and therefore the public pension age is now 69. There is an exception where those employed in very physically demanding jobs can get a pension at 60 - mostly aimed at construction workers and laborers. I work a desk job so the only stress I have is office politics, and we have a pretty positive social environment at work.
