#17 Back On Her Feet

In the Spring of 1917, Sumpter Valley Ry. #17 laid over on her fireman's side on the spur leading the WH Eccles Lbr. Co. mill at Austin, Or. The road bed had probably become saturated with Spring melt off and could not support the concentrated weight of the big Mike. In this scene we see that #17 is back on here feet, but her stack is laying on the ground at the lower right corner of the shot. On the left side of the photo beyond her headlight we see the tip of the boom of the railroad's wrecker #070. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
