Many thanks for your response and I totally understand and support the goal of preserving the way things were done. Much of my commentary was fun speculation, and like many engineers I am undeniably excitable at the thought of applying some of my experience to steam locomotive design.
I would like to say that such changes wouldn't force a deviation from historic practices - there is no "modern technology" and the same materials and fabrication methods would be used. You would just calculate dimensions using different knowledge and equations.
