Today 488 pulled a train with a master mechanic front end for the first time since any K-36 has done so post 1941-42ish? (maybe someone here has an exact date on when 488 got a cyclone). Here’s a clip of the train climbing past the Lobato whistle board.
Veteran engineer Carlos Llamas was at the throttle and an excellent firing job was performed by Austin Goodwin. Since we decided to go from the cyclone to the “new old” master mechanic front end draught arrangement, I have been pretty nervous about how this thing would fire. Seeing the safety lifted here with a clean stack and 8 cars eased my nerves.
I walked up to the engine at Cumbres and Austin had a giant smile on his face before he exclaimed, “This is the best steaming engine we have now!” I guess there’s a reason why this design was the industry standard for many years.
