On June 1, 1963, 498 and 488 double headed the annual RMRRC excursion from Chama to Cumbres. I rode the train from Chama to Alamosa, but my 7-year-old brother JR brother rode only from Chama to Cumbres, where my parents picked him up (to his great regret). My dad took these photos of the double header as the train approached Cumbres.
After reaching Cumbres, 498 wyed and returned to Chama for an afternoon Cumbres turn with 484. The next day I rode the cab of 498 from Antonito to Alamosa, and on the following day I rode the Illini excursion from Alamosa to Durango, my first trips on the narrow gauge "mainline".
