Yup.

IIRC D&RGW still exists, legally, just as Central Pacific lasted until 1959 or so, Michigan Central until 1975 (Conrail) and so on. So at some point you have to decide what constitutes "Fallen". Even the Wabash, for/from whose absorption into N&W the term was coined, ("Follow the Flag") was actually only leased and continued to exist, legally, for many years. (Still listed in my 1980 Moody's Manual, the most recent I have I'm afraid.)

And when do you start? Should Camden & Amboy be listed? What about Philadelphia & Norristown? Both important lines in their day whose routes (I think, I don't follow the post Conrail eastern lines that closely) remain in service to this day.

Or at least use a format like that for an outline, For example(partial):
-C&S(1899)
--UPD&G(1890)
----CC
----CC of Wy
----D&NO
----DT&G
----D&FtW
----RC
----Chicosa Canyon
----GB&L
----D&MP
----DM&B
----GSL&P
----CdeA
----C&N
--DL&G(1889, formerly DSP&P)
--DSP&H (controlled, remained in corporate existence until ?)
(yes, I cribbed from Mac Poor's "DSP&P" there) (And I left out the controlled lines in Texas)
And then you still have the question of do you include lines incorporated just to allow construction beyond the original charter? For example here, the DSP&P incorporated companies (Denver, South Park & Ten Mile and Denver, South Park & Leadville) on 12/13/1878 to cover possible construction on two different routes to Leadville (via Boreas or via Buena Vista) but I'm unsure of how long, or how much, either of them existed before being submerged into DSP&P.
OTOH, D&RG did the same in a lot of places and some of those lines (Rio Grande Gunnison, for ex.) laid track which was promptly leased to D&RG but remained in legal existence until included in the big D&RG/RGW merger in 1908!
In short it's a tangled web, even if you stick to one CA 1940 Class 1 road and it's roots. And lord above, is it worse in the East or South!
