If by "joke", you mean they're not intended to be, in any way, a serious representation of what's really the most popular
whatever, then I agree.
From USA Today's perspective, these things are designed to generate clicks and views which translate to revenue for them. It's not intended to be fair, representative or, for that matter, to be taken too seriously. It is decidedly non-democratic and unscientific by design.
On the other hand, it remains good marketing material. To say that your organization has been "voted the number one
name your category by USA Today readers" has real marketing value even though the most cursory inspection shows it actually means little. Like it or not, a vote provides tangible value to the RR. So I vote - often - with open eyes and clear conscience.
Just another viewpoint.
