Phil Lomax has scanned another whack of Jack Alexander’s photos and provided a number of them for posting. This first of four posts is a few shots of the Rocky Mtn RR Club’s 1947 RGS excursion, and thanks to Jimmy Blouch for providing the following detail. It was powered by tenwheeler #20 and ran May 30, 1947 Ridgway to Dolores, where the group spent the night. Apparently the 20 developed leaky flues and the return trip on the 31st was headed by Rio Grande 319.
The first b&w shot shows the 20 being prepared to get the excursion underway from Ridgway, while the second is a super view at the Lizard Head Pass station. The third view is the classic portrait showing Lizard Head peak, and the final photo is of 319 the following day taking water at Rico on the way home to Ridgway.
I admit that I kinda chose these photos to post not just to show the railway, but also the excursionists on the trip. If you look closely they’re in every shot, especially that third photo where someone got in the way of Jack’s camera. Oh to have been on that trip, whether someone wrecked your photo or not!
(Other RGS subjects to follow).......
Cheers,
Ralph
