Since 480 is the road engine and 101 is the helper, and 101 was only needed between Hermosa and Rockwood, it was easier and faster to put it in front. Otherwise 480 would have had to decouple, move to a siding so 101 could then hook up, then 480 would have to recouple on front. Much simpler and quicker to just hook 101 on front.
