Another factor at play, typically the eccentrics were attached to the same axle as the main rod. This helped keep the valve motion in sync with the Pistons.
As for the SG conversions, I am not sure what happened between the frames, and I have never seen a picture clear enough to tell. It is possible that the driver spacing changed and/or there was more room to fit the eccentrics for axle 3. When converted back, I assume original frames were used, and everything was put back the way it was for simplicity.
401 however, I do not have any real info on. It is possible that this was an attempt at keeping the eccentrics on axle 2, and moving the main rod to 3??? If you view the link below, and zoom all the way in to 401, you can see that the valve crank is still between drivers 1 and 2, meaning the eccentrics are still attached to axle 2. Maybe this proved to cause issues and was reverted back...
