I like Dave’s idea of photos and have enjoyed your postings on abandoned lines. I’ve conducted some pretty thorough research on a long abandoned narrow/standard gauge junction near me, gone now for almost 90 years. Aside from old maps and plans one of the greatest aids has been a series of slides taken by a railfan who hiked the area in the early 1970s. The environs are now completely obscured by vegetation in most areas, and some sections of the old grades are entirely impassable by gnarled undergrowth. So his photos have helped greatly in envisioning the site. He wondered why he bothered to take them at the time, but we’re now glad he did.

Cheers,
Ralph
